What can VIN of older Volvo tell about the vehicle?

The Volvo first started using VINs in 1976 on the 164 and 240 series Volvos. Since the VIN format was not standardized at that time yet, the codes of pre-1981 cars were somewhat different from modern VIN numbers. Most VINs were 15-character long. However they still contained much of the same information, including the Volvo model, engine, year, country of origin.
