The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that more than 450,000 vehicles are sold each year with false odometer readings and puts the chance of odometer fraud during a vehicle’s first 11 years at 3.47%. NHTSA has also estimated that odometer fraud costs American car buyers more than $1 billion annually.
The average vehicle in the EpicVIN database covers 11,464 miles a year. Add that figure to the last recorded reading for every year since the record and compare the result with the dashboard. NHTSA also recommends comparing the odometer with the title and maintenance or inspection records and checking whether vehicle wear is consistent with the displayed mileage.

The Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994 (DPPA), 18 U.S.C. § 2721, restricts disclosure of personal information held in Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) records. EpicVIN’s public plate lookup does not display the registered owner’s name and address, telephone number or driver’s license number.
The DPPA also provides specific permissible uses for protected motor-vehicle information, including certain government, court and law-enforcement purposes. A vehicle’s specifications, title brands, accident-related records and other non-personal vehicle information may come from different public record and commercial data sources.
